IDI 9 E-learning Design William Horton, Author, Designing Web-Based Training
Katherine Horton, Author, E-Learning Tools and Technologies
Conducted entirely online, this certificate is all about design - not theories or tool-operation - just the design of effective, economical e-learning.

Centered upon a specific, concrete design scenario, this pragmatic and applicable course, teaches how e-learning technologies and media can create learning experiences that educate and engage.

In this course, you take on the role of a consultant whose client wants a top-down re-design of their current e-learning. During the redesign process, you'll make all the crucial design decisions of a real project. Through a rich blend of online meetings, discussions and guided research, you will complete the design process for a realistic project - and will have the design documents to prove it. This program will cover the following topics:
  • Goals and approach: pure and blended, stand-alone and embedded, synchronous and asynchronous, learner-led and instructor led.
  • Organization and access: structuring and sequencing learning experiences and providing adequate navigation among them.
  • Activities to engage learners: simulations, games, virtual laboratories, online museums and field trips, story-sharing, role-playing, and team design.
  • Testing: goals for testing, types of test questions, providing feedback, writing valid test questions.
  • Display: layout, colors, fonts, legibility, balance, aesthetics vs. function.
  • Objects and external standards: designing self contained modules, strategies for reuse, SCORM, and Section 508.
